The Associate Software Engineer contributes to the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software solutions while continuing to build technical expertise and professional experience. You will be working on our Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) Health Information Oversight System (HIOS) team where you will be planning, developing, executing, and documenting manual and automated testing across functional, integration, system, regression, performance, and release-readiness activities.
This role will also be responsible for maintaining and expanding reusable test suites, managing defects and test evidence, and verifying traceability between requirements and results. Engineers at this level are expected to work with increasing independence, own smaller features and enhancements, and actively participate in team collaboration and technical discussions.
What you will do:
- Design, develop, test, and maintain software solutions that support customer and business objectives.
- Plan, develop, execute, and document manual and automated testing across functional, integration, system, regression, performance, and release-readiness activities.
- Maintain and expand reusable test suites, manage defects and test evidence, and verify traceability between requirements and results.
- Leverage tools like JMeter, Postman, Selenium, Playwright in support of test automation.
- Ensure accessibility in development leveraging tools like ANDI, Inspect DevTool, CCA, NVDA, and JAWS.
- Implement features and enhancements with limited supervision.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices.
- Troubleshoot and resolve application defects and technical issues.
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, business analysts, and stakeholders throughout the development lifecycle.
- Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge-sharing efforts.
- Participate in Agile planning, estimation, and delivery activities.
- Continuously improve technical skills and knowledge of modern development practices.
Agile Collaboration
- Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
- Perform peer code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices.
- Produce technical documentation supporting development and operational activities.
- Communicate technical solutions, risks, and progress with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, QA engineers, DevOps engineers, and other cross-functional team members to deliver reliable software.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related technical field or equivalent experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a CMS Moderate Risk Public Trust clearance

Two or more years of software development experience.
